The 2024 MotoNomad Rally has officially started! Some light rain couldn’t even dampen the riders’ enthusiasm as they headed off on day one of the MotoNomad Rally with 2,000km of off-road terrain laying between them and the finish line back in Ulaanbaatar. As the riders headed south away from Lake Hövsgöl the rain clouds soon cleared, and the wet weather gear was stowed away. The first stop was the regional city of Murun where most of the riders stopped for lunch and stocked up on last minute supplies before the day’s route took them further away from civilisation and into the unknown.
198km into day one’s stage just south of the remote village of Burenkhaan, riders were met with some tricky navigation, and a number of the riders missed a fork in the trail. Half of the group stayed on track and camped at the planned spot on the northern shores of Sanglyn Dalal Lake, whilst the rest of the group after realising they were on the wrong track continued nevertheless, finding a camping spot for the night on the southern side of the lake. This area of Mongolia is untouched and pristine, with numerous nomad camps dotted around the shores. Here we watched the locals going about their daily routines, raising their livestock and families as the sun dipped over the horizon to end a massive first day.
